There are many options available including access over the telephone or Internet.

Consider these ideas:

• Alarm system monitored preferred .
• Lights with  movement detectors.
• Sensors that detect window and door movement
• Motion detectors and glass breaking sensors
• Dead bolt locks and doors and windows.
• Have a sign that advertises that a security system is installed.
• Cameras that can be accessed over the Internet

These are the most common items used in the home. consider the use of window and door reed switches or sensors that can be activated for perimeter security when you are at home, these are normally only required on the ground floor, if the top floors are accessible then they should be installed at those levels as well.

What works best is a system that makes a great deal of noise and flashes lights. Intruders do not like to draw attention to themselves.
